God knows best

“Because you say so, I will let down the nets” (Luke 5:5 ). I’m not very good at being told what to do! There’s always a bit of me that thinks I really do know what’s best and then along comes a situation when I simply have no choice in the matter! Illness always reduces me to that state. Be a ‘patient patient,’ I’m told. Everyone around expertly makes all the decisions – what treatment, what medicine, what to eat and what not to eat, which tests are best, and then I have to give in! It’s not always the case that other people know what’s best for us in these situations, but it’s often worth humbling ourselves to the knowledge and wisdom of the professionals! Jesus knew that if these fishermen put out their nets again they would have a fine catch. Simon questioned his judgement. Simon was a fisherman who knew that deep water fishing was reserved for the night catch, but he was still gracious enough to say ‘ …. because you say so, I will let down the nets’. I hope we can find it in our hearts to be gracious enough to accept instruction and direction from Jesus! Because he has an overview of our lives – He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End (Revelation ch. 22 v. 13) – it really is safe to obey him for the next step forward! Lord Jesus, please humble my heart today to accept your wisdom, even in those matters when I think I know best. Amen |
